Disfigured serial killer Freddy Krueger (Haley) stalks a group of young people in their dreams, forcing them to remain awake as the only alternative to death.

This might be the most appealing horror remake to date, merely due to the casting of Jackie Earle Haley as the sweatered one. And in the world of music video directors turned auteurs, here’s hoping Samuel Bayer (“Smells Like Teen Spirit”) is more Michel Gondry/Spike Jonze than McG/Joseph Khan. Have to admit I dug the teaser trailer, and I’m into the other cast members, especially Kyle Gallner (the most successful ex-”Veronica Mars” star?), Rooney Mara (potential new scream queen action), and Thomas Dekker (who should be seen this year in All About Evil, the first midnight movie directed by a drag queen).

Single gal Zoe (Lopez) meets potential husband Stan (O’Loughlin) on the day of her artificial insemination. Despite the initial spark, the two lovers begin to wonder if they’re taking the right steps to an enduring romance.

Chances are Jennifer Lopez’s second big-screen comeback attempt might be irresistible to the Sex and the City set (it’s cool that there’s a smattering of female-friendly movies this spring/summer). Look for a big return on a modest budget, though it’s doubtful Back-up will rack-up blockbuster numbers. Casting Patrick Dempsey might’ve helped to that end? Hopefully director Alan Poul, recently of the short-lived TV show “Swingtown”, will bring some of that show’s style to these proceedings.

After being betrayed and left for dead, members of a CIA black ops team root out those who targeted them for assassination.

Andy Diggle is one of the most treasured contemporary sci-fi comics writers, and Warner Bros., who undoubtedly learned a series of lessons from the non-event that was the Watchmen, has outfitted the characters from Eisner nominated espionage series with a cast cultivated for crossover appeal (though, yes, we think it’s curious to have Jeffrey Dean Morgan in another comics adaptation). And there’s the odd/cool couple of director Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard) and screenwriter Peter Berg (The Kingdom), who is more familiar with the genre. Despite the fact that he has zero superpowers, teenage fanboy Dave Lizewski (Johnson) looks to reincarnate himself as a crime-fighting superhero named Kick-Ass, a decision that will inspire a subculture of copy cats, put his life in danger, and unite him with a similarly minded father-daughter duo (Cage and Moretz).

Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz could become two of the hottest young stars this year if their respective projects live up to the advance hype; aside from this comic adaptation, Johnson is playing John Lennon in Nowhere Boy while Ms. Moretz will appear in Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Let Me In. Perhaps they should start dating one another to really cause a tabloid frenzy. Anyway, back to this adaptation of the comics by Mark Millar (he’s the guy behind Wanted, too). You might remember that director Matthew Vaughn raised the cash for the production independently since the major studios feared the comic’s level of hyper-violence; if I recall correctly, this was right before the Iron Man era, when the idea of developing “unknown” comics wasn’t an option in Hollywood. Fast forward to Comic-Con 2009, with Lionsgate on board and knockout footage that was received better than Avatar and other major league projects, and an online sensation was born. The question of whether or not this one goes mainstream might not matter; with such a low budget, a built-in audience, and a storyline that naturally leads to a sequel — which already has a premise, according to Millar — a second chapter here could be more of a sure thing than Wanted 2.
